What it is

The LDS V964 is a high-force, water-cooled electrodynamic shaker rated at 20,000 lbf (89 kN) sine and random force, for vibration and shock testing of large payloads. It pairs a high-performance armature design with water-cooled coils to deliver 100 g sine acceleration and 78.7 in/s (2 m/s) velocity on a 17 in (432 mm) armature. An automatic armature and body position load compensation system handles larger loads, and the internal load support carries up to 2,000 lb (907 kg). The shaker is driven by the LDS DPA-K amplifier range and has been used in single- and multi-shaker configurations to test products such as satellites and missiles.

  • Sine force: 20,000 lbf (89 kN) peak
  • Random force: 20,000 lbf (89 kN) rms
  • Half-sine shock force: 42,022 lbf (186.9 kN)
  • Acceleration: 100 g sine peak; 70 g random rms
  • Velocity: 78.7 in/s (2 m/s) sine peak, full field
  • Displacement: 1.5 in (38 mm) peak-to-peak, continuous
  • Usable frequency range: 5 Hz to 2.5 kHz
  • Internal load support: 2,000 lb (907 kg)
  • Amplifier: LDS DPA-K range, from 40/70K to 130/140K

At a glance

20,000 lbf/89 kN sine force for true high-force structural tests

20,000 lbf/89 kN random force for full-class PSD capability

17"/432 mm armature for 3.13 kN.m overturning moment supports awkward payloads

1.5"/38 mm stroke, 5 Hz - 2.5 kHz for controlled high-force testing

Sinusoidal

20,000 lbf, 100 g

Swept and dwell sine testing to 20,000 lbf (89 kN) at up to 100 g, with 78.7 in/s (2 m/s) velocity at full field.

Random

20,000 lbf rms, 70 g

Full-class PSD work to 20,000 lbf (89 kN) rms and 70 g rms, sustained by the water-cooled coil design.

Shock / transient

Half-sine to 42,022 lbf

Two-millisecond half-sine pulses to 42,022 lbf (186.9 kN) for high-force shock qualification.

What it is used for

Some of the use cases for the LDS V964 include:

  • 3-axis testing of complete satellite systems: full-system vibration testing in single- or multi-shaker setups.
  • Avionics and military hardware testing: qualification of avionics, missiles, and defense electronics.
  • Structural dynamics testing: high-force excitation of large structures.
  • Clean room environments: vibration testing where contamination control is required.
  • Multi-shaker, multi-axis applications: combining several shakers to drive large payloads.
  • Horizontal testing: trunnion rotation, or a combination shaker/slip table base.

Key features

  • Water-cooled coils: a high-performance armature design combined with water-cooled coils delivers strong acceleration and velocity performance.
  • Automatic load compensation: an automatic armature and body position load compensation system accommodates larger loads.
  • Eight amplifier configurations: the DPA-K range runs from 40 to 140 kVA in 8 kVA increments, so force can be sized to the test program.
  • Lin-E-Air trunnions: standard, with a body rotation gearbox for vertical or horizontal operation. Solid trunnions are available on request.
  • Stiff suspension: 120,000 lbf/in (21 kN/mm) cross-axial and 5 × 10⁶ lbf·in/rad (565 kN·m/rad) rotational stiffness.
  • Internal load support: carries 2,000 lb (907 kg).
  • Low stray field: under 9 gauss (0.9 mT) standard, or under 6 gauss (0.6 mT) with the low gauss option.
  • Armature inserts and options: M8, M10, 3/8 UNC, or 3/8 UNF all standard, plus combination shaker/slip table base, thermal barrier, and chamber support kit.

Why engineers pick it

20,000 lbf on a 17 in armature. The DPA 130/140K-DC delivers the full 20,000 lbf (89 kN) on both sine and random. The DPA 100/140K-TC reaches 20,000 lbf (89 kN) sine with 18,000 lbf (80.1 kN) random.

Scales with the amplifier. Eight DPA-K configurations run from 13,500 lbf (60.1 kN) with the DPA 40/70K-TC up to the full 20,000 lbf (89 kN).

Proven on large payloads. The V900 series has been used in single- and multi-shaker configurations to test satellites and missiles.

Handles heavy test articles. The 2,000 lb (907 kg) internal load support and automatic load compensation keep large loads centered.

The V964 system

  • LDS DPA-K amplifier: a control bay plus power bays, from 40 to 140 kVA in 8 kVA increments.
  • Field power supply (FPS) and cooling unit: field power and raw-water cooling for the shaker coils.

Site requirements

  • Power: maximum required input is 244.59 kVA for the amplifier and 70.26 kVA for the FPS and cooling unit.
  • Compressed air: 100 psi (6.9 bar).
  • Raw water: the cooling unit uses up to 23.2 gal/min (88 L/min) at maximum capacity, with a maximum inlet temperature of 90 °F (32 °C).
  • Ambient: shaker 40 to 86 °F (4.5 to 30 °C); amplifier, FPS, and cooling unit 41 to 104 °F (5 to 40 °C).
  • Acoustics: 105 dBA shaker, up to 85 dBA amplifier, and 68 dBA FPS and cooling unit at 6.6 ft (2 m).
